Clerkenwell Design Week technical article/QA: Mapesil Tile Matt and Mapesil Stone Matt

Clerkenwell Design Week technical article/QA: Mapesil Tile Matt and Mapesil Stone Matt

Mapei World London City Stand: Mapei World London City

What’s different about Mapesil Tile Matt and Stone Matt?

Most silicone sealants have a glossy finish that’s ideal for porcelain and ceramic tiles that have a sheen.  Mapesil Tile Matt and Mapesil Stone Matt, on the other hand, have a matt/non-shiny finish, so they blend seamlessly with matt-finish natural stone and porcelain tiles.  Also, Mapesil Stone Matt does not stain porous or sensitive stone like limestone, sandstone and marble.

Are the sealants solvent-free?

Yes, they both have solvent-free formulations and are certified EC1 Plus (very low VOC) according to GEV EMICODE.  They are also MEKO (Methyl ethyl ketoxime) free; MEKO is a skinning agent used in standard silicone sealants which gives them their distinctive odour.

Are the new sealants resistant to mould?

Yes, both contain biocide which delays the formulations of mould in damp environments.

Are the sealants easy to apply?

Yes, they are. They’re supplied in standard 300ml cartridges and are applied using a skeleton gun and are tooled off using standard silicone finishing tools.  The method is the same as with standard silicone: You cut the tip of the cartridge near the thread and screw on the nozzle.  Then, trim the tip of the nozzle at 45° according to the width of the joint required and insert the cartridge into the gun. Then, you finish off the sealed surface with a suitable dry tool before the skin forms.

Mapesil Tile Matt and Mapesil Stone Matt are highly viscose, so they can be shaped and smoothed easily.  They’re also highly elastic, so they absorb movement.  However, unlike traditional sealants, it isn’t advisable to use liquids to finish this product off, as it can alter the matt finish of the silicone.

Before applying, ensure that surfaces are dry, sound and free from dust and residue, e.g. oil, grease, wax, old paint and rust.  If using indoors, make sure rooms are adequately ventilated.   We do not recommend application in temperatures below 0°C.

How long do the sealants take to dry?

The sealants start to skin over after approximately 10 minutes.  Both products cure at a rate of 3mm per day and final drying time will vary depending on the thickness applied.

How can I remove sealant from surfaces and tools?

If the sealant is only partially cured, you can use a common solvent like ethyl acetate or benzene to remove it. Once completely dry, the sealant must be removed mechanically, with a sharp blade or tool.

Are the sealants offered in different colours?

Yes, Mapesil Tile Matt is available in 11 colours. Mapesil Stone Matt is available in 9 colours – 6 with a smooth finish and 3 with a coarse speckled/textured finish, which complements tactile stones, like granite and travertine.  They include:

Mapesil Tile Matt – White, Moon White, Grey Manhattan, Medium Grey, Cement Grey, Anthracite, Black, Jasmine, Beige 2000, Sand and Transparent.

Mapesil Stone Matt – White, Grey Manhattan, Textured Grey Manhattan, Silver Grey, Textured Silver Grey, Cement Grey, Black, Jasmine Beige, Texture Jasmine Beige and Beige.

All of the shades co-ordinate with Mapei coloured grouts.

How do you maintain the sealant, to stop it from discolouring?

To keep tiled areas looking clean and fresh, we recommend regular cleaning of natural stone and tile surfaces with concentrate, neutral cleaner, UltraCare Multicleaner, and ready-to-use UltraCare Multicleaner Spray, which is ideal for maintaining shower and wall tiles, vanity areas, etc.
