WOODBENDER LAUNCHES THE SCOOP 33 CHAIR AT CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK
The Scoop 33 Chair celebrates the long lineage of steam-bending and the enduring power of handcraft. Rooted in techniques industrialised more than a century ago, it draws on the pioneering spirit of early benders while advancing the craft through careful process innovation. The result is a simple, honest piece that emphasises how it was made.
Scoop 33 reveals its structure through a single length of timber, hand-bent into a continuous three-dimensional form that provides sculptural, intuitive support. Its curves are not decorative but arise directly from the bending process, creating fluid lines that naturally cradle the body.
Hand-bending is both demanding and restrictive, yet we embraced it as a catalyst for innovation. By refining jigs, timing, and sequence, we aligned method and form, deepening our understanding of strength, spring-back, and ergonomics. The chair’s name marks a key milestone: thirty-three bends were required to achieve the final form, with many more iterations refining production.
Intentionally understated, Scoop 33 embodies the elegance of hand bending in a design that is enduring, confident, and free of unnecessary embellishment.
