Expanding Thresholds
Within the prototyping for Expanding Thresholds, the initial working models considered origami and different geometries that this threshold can expand and collapse on itself. By using a variety of materials to create undulating forms, I tested various methods, finally becoming inspired by a childrens toy, which I deconstructed. I tested angles and construction methods on how these pieces could fit together and work within the context of the site. I then pushed the aesthetic of these pieces towards an organic nature, having this dichotomy between the synthetic acrylic material and the naturalistic forms. I considered different approaches to track systems within the design, starting with columns and moving to free-flowing ceiling attachments to create a more dynamic feel. Within the final prototype, I created a mechanism that could expand and collapse in four directions and sewing organza fabric to the overall structure, creating a more natural wave-like feel. This final design, although not perfect, enfolds people into the space, enhancing visibility to the entrance of Queer Britain as well as symbolising the intricate shifting and transformative qualities of queer-folk.
