'Maitrise' risque wallpaper
Chains, handcuffs and intertwined bodies trail across this bold wallpaper, creating grand motifs reminiscent of the Baroque era. Inspired by visual illusions and subversive interpretations, Sheffield-based artist Sarah Jane Palmer has created an irrerevent design containing unexpected naughty secrets.
"What I love is that I can create design details that could be missed at first glance, but are then revealed with a second look," says Sarah. "I'm particularly interested in the immersive experience of developing patterns and illusions, drawing on elements of eroticism, humour and suspense."
Once Sarah had created the original design by hand, it was applied to the paper via an engraved roller in a printing technique known as flexography. This method creates a smooth, matt finish with clean, distinct lines – perfect for the intriguing, black shapes in Sarah's risqué design.
