Phyta Biodesign is a London-based architectural design studio on a mission to rewild the built environment. We bridge data-driven design, material research, and advanced digital fabrication to create facade systems that provide habitats for critical species threatened by urbanisation and climate change.
Our work begins with a simple provocation: What if buildings could function like trees? A single tree supports hundreds of species through its adaptive textures, complex form, and varied spatial structure. We apply this principle to architecture to engineer facades that actively invite and sustain biodiversity, from solitary bees and birds to mosses, algae, and microscopic life.
At the heart of our practice is a rejection of the one-size-fits-all approach. We use computational design and digital fabrication to move from mass standardisation to mass customisation, translating site-specific ecological data directly into manufacturable geometry. Every installation is unique, shaped by the species, microclimate, and context of its location.
Our material explorations centre on various wood, ceramic and mycelium composites. We investigate circular, bio-integrated materiality that is inherently receptive to life. Whereas, our modular systems integrate directly into building facades, creating interconnected networks of urban habitat at architectural scale.
