Mixu, designed in collaboration with Gensler
Mixu is designed using a range of different components, always with sustainability in mind and with the aim of making this dynamic collection a materially conscious system throughout its life cycle.
Seat options are available in post-industrial recycled plastic, FSC certified wood, fabric, or leather finishes.
Seats can be combined with backrest options in a plastic, fabric, or leather and four-leg bases in either metal or FSC certified wood. A stool option with the same size seat as the chair offers generous comfort for hospitality or contract use.
Mixu’s seat is available in multiple options: the first is post-industrial recycled polypropylene, which means that it can be both recycled and reused. It is reinforced with fiberglass to enhance performances and durability, and labelled so to facilitate the recycling process.
A second option is multi-layered FSC-certified wood of European origin. This wood is sustainable because it comes from forests managed following rigorous environmental, social and economic standards.
The fabric upholstery of the seat with polyurethane foam padding is made with no glue nor stapling, allowing for easy replacement and extending the life of the product.
Similarly to the fabric version, the leather upholstery uses no glues nor stapling so to ensure all component parts can be recycled or repurposed.
Mixu’s fully recyclable backrest is made of robust, durable and high-performance virgin polypropylene, reinforced with a great percentage of fiberglass to meet specific resistance strength requirements. Both the backrest’s upholstery and the polyurethane foam padding are manufactured with no glue. The backrest can be completely disassembled, allowing for recycle.
Mixu’s four-leg base is available in two options – the first is steel metal, made with up to 70-percent recycled steel and finished with a powder-based coat — free of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emissions — so to reduce environmental impact. Gliders are entirely made of recyclable plastic.
The second option is FSC-certified solid oak wooden legs, assembled to the metal frame without glue to ease disassembling and recycling process.
Mixu can be shipped assembled or disassembled. In both cases, the quantity of pieces per cubic meter can be increased through multiple packaging, thus reducing the volume and optimizing transportation.
Lightweight cardboard is used to reduce shipping weight and energy needed to transport. Cardboard boxes are 100% recyclable and biodegradable.
Plastic is used to protect furniture from condensation and moisture during transportation, shipping, and storage. Packaging for Mixu includes a recyclable plastic bag for product protection. Cardboard supports — not polystyrene — are used to fix Mixu within the box for safe transport.
