Julie Humphryes is a founding partner of Archer Humphryes Architects, an internationally recognised studio known for designing distinctive hospitality, residential and cultural spaces that seamlessly integrate architecture and interiors and heritage contexts.

Born in the UK in 1970, Julie read architecture at Cambridge University, enrolling in 1989. During her time there, she was taught by leading figures including Colin St John Wilson, then Head of School, and architect Eric Parry, now a Royal Academician, who served as her personal tutor as an undergraduate. Her academic research explored the research between architecture, landscape and cultural history, including a study of the ancient Mesoamerican city of Tikal in Guatemala with archeologist Professor Norman Hammond, examining how monumental architecture can be embedded within natural landscapes.

A second dissertation focused on the work of Italian rationalist architect Terragni, and its relationship to the metaphysical art movement of De Chirico and Morandi, inspired in part by research by architect Peter Eisenman into Terragni’s Casa del Fascio. This early exploration of architectural history and theory continues to inform Julie's approach to design, particularly in balancing modern interventions with historic context.

Julie began her professional career working on the Georgian Group Headquarters on Fitzroy Square before joining Australian architecture practice Denton Corker Marshall, where she served as project architect on the Sanderson hotel in London in collaboration with Philippe Starck.

She later joined Virgin Atlantic, working within Richard Branson’s expanding portfolio of travel and hospitality ventures. There she contributed to the development of innovative luxury travel concepts, collaborating with Airbus and Boeing on early design proposals and helping to shape award-winning airport lounge interiors alongside Softroom and Eight Inc. This role took her around the world researching hospitality environments and luxury resorts, including a period based in Tokyo. Julie subsequently became Co-Head of Design at YOO, the residential and hotel design company founded by Philippe Starck with Matthew Freud as chairman, where she worked on international design-led developments.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and was recently elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The Fellowship panel recognised her work in heritage-led regeneration and the sustainable reuse of existing buildings, highlighting her commitment to embedding innovation within conservation practice and advocating for community-focused regeneration in which heritage becomes a catalyst for cultural and economic renewal. Alongside her professional work, Julie has contributed to architectural education, teaching at institutions including the Royal College of Art in London.

At Archer Humphryes Architects, Julie’s work continues to be shaped by a longstanding interest in architectural history, the adaptive reuse of buildings and the creation of contemporary hospitality environments that respond sensitively to their cultural and historic setting.
