Alex Chinneck's A Week at the Knees was unveiled during Clerkenwell Design Week 2025. It was a striking exploration of architectural illusion and material play. Installed in the historic setting of Charterhouse Square, London, the piece resembled a traditional Georgian townhouse façade - yet it appeared to bend, arch, and relax as if caught mid-motion. Comprising around 7,000 hand-laid bricks, supported by 320 metres of repurposed steel, and featuring custom-made bending windows and doors, the sculpture measured approximately 13.5 metres long, 5.5 metres high, and only 15 centimetres deep, creating a paradoxical sense of lightness despite its 11.5-tonne weight.
Made with 320 metres of repurposed steel and bespoke bending windows, doors and bricks, the work has been created in collaboration with companies across British industry including Chiltern GRC, Cleveland Steel, Crittall Windows, FabSpeed, and Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC.
