SEW presents the “Brew House” at Clerkenwell Design Week, a pavilion constructed from 600 innovative Brew Bricks. As a transdisciplinary practice working across architecture, landscape, and urban design, SEW positions sustainable design as a means of enriching the storytelling of cities.
In pursuing construction methods that reduce environmental impact, the project originated from a single guiding question: whether a waste product from everyday routines could be transformed into a functional building material.
The development of the Brew Brick reflects a process of collective effort and innovation. Over several months, approximately 300kg of waste coffee grounds were collected from London coffee shops, with priority given to businesses that actively separate their waste. These materials were then delivered to the specialist brickmakers at York Handmade, who incorporated the organic waste into their clay-firing process.
