The installation was initially designed around recycled materials the team had available to use from previous projects, including diamond embossed polycarbonate corrugated panels, acrylic and ceramic tiles. Some additional materials have also been donated to complete the intervention. The team were inspired by Clerkenwell’s rich water heritage from wells and rivers to subterranean waterways.
The design incorporates water, fluid forms and reflective surfaces. Centred on providing a place for rest, the installation invites the public to reconsider the existing walkway through the historic arch. It encourages a moment of pause to appreciate Clerkenwell’s unique architecture, while reimagining the use of public space.
The design also allows for flexible programming, from workshops and talks to informal gatherings or quiet moments of pause, offering new ways to engage with the arch and its surroundings. The result is a contemporary piece that honours the area’s past while looking towards more sustainable futures
